Europe’s EV Market Share Tops 25 Percent for the First Time as June Registrations Surge Nearly 40 Percent

Europe’s electric vehicle (EV) market share reached a new milestone in June, surpassing 25 percent for the first time. According to the E-Mobility Europe bulletin by New AutoMotive, battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations hit a notable 275,060 across 17 European markets, marking a substantial increase of nearly 40 percent compared to June last year.

Key Highlights:

  • Market Share: BEVs claimed over a quarter of all new car sales in 17 European markets, a testament to the growing popularity of electric vehicles.
  • First Half Performance: The first half of 2026 saw more than 1,240,000 BEV registrations, an increase of over a third from the same period in 2025.
  • Leading Markets: Germany led with 84,057 BEV registrations in June, accounting for above 28 percent of new car sales. France followed with nearly 30 percent market share.
  • Regional Disparities: While Norway has nearly completed its transition to EVs, with over 96 percent market share in June and near-flat growth due to a predominantly electric vehicle market, other countries like the Netherlands experienced drops due to tax incentive changes. Italy, despite doubling its EV registrations, still had a lower market share.
  • Driving Factors: EU CO2 fleet targets tightening, the entry of Chinese brands with competitively priced vehicles, and growing demand are among the forces propelling the EV market’s growth.

This surge in EV registrations underscores the rapid transformation of Europe’s automotive landscape as it navigates towards more sustainable transportation options.
