Fujifilm Raises Camera Prices Up to €500 Due to AI Memory Crisis
Fujifilm is raising the prices of five camera models by up to €500 starting September 1, citing the global DRAM crisis. The price hikes are a direct result of the memory shortage that has been affecting various electronics categories, including smartphones and laptops.
A Global Issue
This isn’t solely a Fujifilm problem; it’s a widespread issue impacting all camera manufacturers. Canon, Sony, and Nikon are expected to follow suit, as they also rely on the same memory suppliers facing rising costs. The AI boom has led to increased demand for high-bandwidth memory in AI accelerators, leaving less available for other devices.
Specific Price Changes
- Fujifilm X100 VI: €200 increase to €1,999.
- Fujifilm X-E5, X-T50, and X-S20: Each model increases by €100.
- Fujifilm GFX100 II: The most significant hike at €500 to €8,499, making it considerably pricier than its direct rival, Hasselblad’s X2D II.
Impact on Camera Manufacturers
The memory crisis is expected to cost Fujifilm approximately ¥11 billion in 2026. Canon and Fujifilm have secured most of the memory they need for this year, potentially delaying further price increases. However, with RAM prices projected to climb by 40-50% in the upcoming quarter, pressure on camera manufacturers is likely to continue.
A Ripple Effect
Other brands, including Apple, have already raised prices due to currency and component pressures. Smaller margins mean that camera manufacturers will struggle to absorb these increased costs without passing them onto consumers.
