The US Military’s First Nvidia GB300 AI Supercomputer

Nvidia donated a GB300 supercomputer to the Navy, to teach officers about the limits of AI.

The Nvidia GB300: A Strategic Chip

The Nvidia GB300, the same chip that the US bars from export to China, now has a new home in Monterey, California. The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has acquired the supercomputer, which runs on Nvidia’s Blackwell Ultra generation—a technology prohibited from sale to Chinese firms.

A Classroom for AI Education

This donation is not about a data center; it’s an integrated system designed to train students in various fields, including weather modeling, cybersecurity, and resilience planning. The NPS aims to use the supercomputer for research and education, showcasing how AI can be employed while also highlighting its limitations.

Teaching Responsibility and Ethics

Captain Michael Owen, a Navy vice provost, emphasizes that the focus is not solely on AI’s capabilities but on understanding its constraints. The NPS wants to equip officers with the knowledge to make ethical decisions regarding AI deployment and responsibly manage these powerful tools.

A Strategic Partnership

This initiative builds upon a previous partnership between Nvidia and the NPS, which established an AI Tech Center in 2025. The supercomputer donation reinforces Nvidia’s commitment to military-facing technologies and serves as a platform for educating future leaders about AI’s potential and pitfalls.

The Bigger Picture

The symbolic value is evident: a chip sensitive enough to be restricted from China now empowers American officers to learn about AI’s responsible use, ensuring they are prepared to navigate this complex technological landscape.
