OpenAI’s Agents Reach 10 Million Weekly Users as ChatGPT Work Push Accelerates

July 21, 2026 – 2:57 pm

OpenAI reports that its agentic side of ChatGPT has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 10 million weekly users less than two weeks after the launch of ChatGPT Work. This marks an impressive growth trajectory for the company’s products, Codex and ChatGPT Work, which together facilitate multi-step tasks across various applications and files.

However, interpreting this figure requires caution. The count refers to weekly active users, not paid seats or actual agent deployments. It is also an internal estimate, raising questions due to OpenAI’s previous self-reported figures and usage claims that have drawn skepticism.

Despite these considerations, the numbers show a rapid increase. Codex reached 5 million weekly users at the end of May, 6 million on July 12th, and roughly 8 million by mid-July. Notably, over a million users are now utilizing Codex for tasks outside software development.

ChatGPT Work launched on July 9th for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers, quickly expanding to Plus and Business plans. This agentic tool splits prompts into smaller steps, generates relevant documents, and operates desktop software through a compliance interface, all while staying dedicated to a project for extended periods.

OpenAI’s goal is to transition ChatGPT from a consumer-focused habit to a work-oriented tool that businesses are willing to pay for. The company highlights the adoption by its own staff and early customers like Zapier, RingCentral, Virgin Atlantic, and Nvidia, who utilize the agentic products for tasks such as automating month-end reporting and forecasting in finance teams.

This milestone positions OpenAI in a competitive landscape with Google’s recently launched Gemini Spark, another always-on assistant designed to streamline work processes through advanced automation capabilities.
