Pentagon Signs Classified AI Deals with Major Tech Giants

May 1, 2026 – 4:20 pm

Summary

The Pentagon has signed classified AI agreements with Nvidia, Microsoft, AWS, and Reflection AI, bringing the total to seven companies (including SpaceX, OpenAI, and Google) operating on secret military networks under "lawful operational use" terms. This phrase replaces safety restrictions previously insisted upon by Anthropic, which led to its ejection from Pentagon supply lines. The message is clear: any AI company setting limits on military AI will be replaced by one that does not.

Key Terms and Companies

The agreements permit "lawful operational use", allowing the US military to transform into an AI-first fighting force. This term effectively expands the scope of AI applications, including targeting assistance, intelligence synthesis, and operational planning on classified and top-secret networks, without specific prohibitions previously sought by Anthropic.

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, refused to remove its restrictions on military use of its technology, ultimately leading to its ejection from the Pentagon’s supply chain despite a $200 million contract.

Other companies signing agreements include:

  • SpaceX
  • OpenAI
  • Google

An AWS spokesperson referred to the Defense Department as "the Department of War" and expressed anticipation for continuing to support their modernization efforts.
