Aachen’s amber raises €7mn to sell AI sovereignty to the Mittelstand

Aachen-based amber has closed a €7 million Series A, co-led by Ventech and NRW.Venture, the venture arm of NRW.BANK. The German startup structures company data before any AI model sees it, claiming token costs can be reduced by up to 60%.

Key Points:

  • amber connects and organizes a company’s internal information before feeding it into large language models. This approach is known as its AI Data Layer.
  • The company argues that the competition for AI models is decreasing, with model quality depending on the context data provided.
  • By structuring data upfront, amber believes it can significantly reduce token costs associated with AI processing.
  • The startup operates on German cloud infrastructure and has no American shareholders, claiming immunity from US Cloud Act provisions compelling data production.
  • amber targets German mid-sized industries (Mittelstand) facing knowledge loss as experienced employees retire without documentation.

Customers:

The customer list includes Ritter Sport (chocolate), Zentis (jam), Hailo (ladders), Scheidt & Bachmann (fare collection and fuelling systems), Schüßler-Plan (engineering consultancy), and Dalli (detergents).
