After AI lunch: Trump backs self-regulation, plans to rename AI

The president praised executives at a White House AI luncheon on September 29, 2026, rejecting new safety rules despite concerns from some attendees. He expressed support for self-regulation and introduced the term "super intelligence" as the official US name for AI.

"There’s a belief that there should be tremendous self-regulation... but the self-regulation is very important," Trump stated.

The event, attended by tech leaders like Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and others, discussed AI safety concerns and local opposition to data centers. Some executives, such as Dario Amodei from Anthropic, raised safety issues, while others acknowledged existing risks.

"Unbelievable feeling in this room," Trump exclaimed, emphasizing the positive attitudes of the participants. He also announced plans to launch America.gov, an AI-powered site for federal services, and ruled out China as a partner on AI safety.

Despite recent industry alarm over advanced AI, no new regulations emerged from the lunch. The administration continues to advocate for voluntary checks on powerful models under a June order.
