Apple's New CEO: John Ternus Takes Over from Tim Cook

Apple has a new CEO, with John Ternus assuming the role on Tuesday, marking the end of Tim Cook’s 15-year tenure at the company. Cook’s farewell memo to staff, obtained by 9to5Mac and reported by Bloomberg, focuses on Apple’s culture rather than specific products or business strategies.

Cook’s Final Words:

“Today is my last day as CEO of Apple. This is a moment I always knew would come one day, and yet it is still hard to believe it has arrived.”

In his memo, Cook emphasizes the importance of culture at Apple, stating, "I am most proud of what an annual report could never capture. This place is proof that culture triumphs over everything." He also quotes Steve Jobs, saying, "Because of who we are and what we believe," to highlight Apple’s impact on the world.

Cook expresses his full support for his successor, John Ternus, describing him as brilliant, wonderful, and capable. He further assures staff that he won’t be leaving Apple entirely but will remain involved in some capacity.

A Look at Cook’s Legacy:

Upon taking over in 2011, Cook steered Apple through significant growth, transforming a company worth under $350bn to one valued at approximately $4.6tn today. Revenue increased from $157bn to an anticipated $477bn for the current fiscal year, with services contributing over $109bn in 2025.

Introducing John Ternus:

Ternus, aged 51, joined Apple as an engineer in 2001 and has since played a pivotal role in developing various products, including iPads, AirPods, iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches. He is known for his work on the Cinema Display, iMacs, and more recently, expanding Apple’s film and TV strategy.

Ternus’ appointment as CEO underscores his deep understanding of Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem, a testament to his capability in leading the company into its next phase of growth.
