iOS 27 Enables Users to Create Custom Wallet Passes from Any QR Code
Apple, after a decade of waiting for developers, is empowering users to create their own digital passes with the new "Create a Pass" feature in iOS 27 Wallet.
Feature Overview
The "Create a Pass" tool allows users to transform any QR code into a personalized digital pass within the Wallet app. This feature, set to be unveiled at WWDC on June 8th, provides two options: starting from scratch or importing a QR code using the iPhone’s camera. Apple offers three customizable templates: Standard (orange), Membership (blue), and Event (purple) for various pass types. Users can customize styles, images, colors, and text fields to tailor each pass to their needs.
Bridging the Gap
Apple has long been encouraging developers to build Wallet passes using PassKit, its framework introduced in iOS 6 (2012). PassKit supports boarding passes, event tickets, coupons, store cards, and generic passes, enabling remote content updates, location-based notifications, and integration with Apple Pay. Despite these incentives, many small businesses have not adopted PassKit due to the development effort required.
By introducing "Create a Pass," Apple is shifting its strategy from developer-dependent to user-driven, acknowledging that widespread adoption of Wallet passes may never come through third-party developers alone.
