Apple’s new chief executive is a hardware engineer. His first lineup answers a software problem with a hinge.

Apple’s New CEO and His First Lineup

Apple’s new chief executive, John Ternus, is a hardware engineer. His initial lineup addresses a software problem with an innovative hinge design.

TL;DR

On September 9th, Ternus will host Apple’s first product launch since taking over from Tim Cook, who stepped down as CEO on September 1st. This event marks the beginning of Apple’s biggest device release cycle ever, featuring new form factors and product categories.

The Engineer’s Solution

Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001 and led hardware engineering since 2021, is renowned for creating better-built products. His approach is to introduce new shapes, such as a foldable iPhone and a touch-screen MacBook.

Addressing Software Concerns

Previously, Apple (see details) faced pressure due to its AI capabilities, specifically its Siri assistant, which fell behind competitors. Siri was rebuilt using a Google Gemini model and launched as a standalone app. However, this solution did not address the underlying problem.

A hinge on the iPhone does not directly solve the AI issue but demonstrates Apple’s expertise in a different domain.

A Premium-Focused Lineup

Notably, Apple is skipping a standard iPhone release this autumn, introducing only the Pro, Pro Max, and a foldable model. This strategic shift moves the flagship moment to only the expensive tier, with volume products released later.
