Astroport and Vermeer Collaborate on Autonomous Lunar Construction Machinery
April 15, 2026 - 4:36 pm
Astroport Space Technologies and Vermeer Corporation have announced a collaboration to adapt industrial surface mining equipment for autonomous lunar construction, aiming to deliver the heavy machinery needed for a permanent human presence on the Moon.
Lunarization of Vermeer's Machinery
The partnership focuses on "lunarizing" Vermeer’s surface mining machinery, utilizing Astroport’s Universal Tool Implement Payload Adapter (UTIPA), a modular system of interchangeable tools designed for robotic construction in extreme lunar conditions. The initial project will involve re-engineering heavy equipment typically relying on mass and weight to function, adapting it for the Moon's low gravity, temperature swings, and abrasive regolith.
"Lunar Iron": Heavy Machinery for Lunar Base Development
The term "Lunar Iron" refers to the class of heavy construction machinery required for lunar base development, including excavators, trenchers, and surface miners capable of tasks such as digging foundations, grading roads, building landing pads, and preparing sites for power systems and habitats. While these tasks are routine on Earth, they present a significant engineering challenge in the Moon's unique environment.
"Vermeer has always been about finding a better way to get tough work done," stated Jason Andringa, president and CEO of Vermeer Corporation. “This collaboration... applies our expertise in automation and heavy equipment to the lunar environment."
National Policy and Lunar Industrial Base
Sam Ximenes, Astroport’s founder and CEO, emphasized the partnership's significance in terms of national policy: "Recent federal mandates have made it clear: the U.S. is committed to a permanent lunar presence... By partnering with Vermeer, we are delivering the ‘Lunar Iron’ necessary..."
UTIPA: The Technical Centerpiece
The collaboration's technical core lies in Astroport’s UTIPA system, which adapts proven industrial machinery for lunar construction by offering a versatile adapter that enables various tools to be swapped out.
