Baseten (baseten on 164news.com) Acquires Blaxel, a Startup Building Sandboxes for AI Agents

Introduction

Baseten, the AI inference company valued at $13bn in June, has acquired Blaxel, a startup specializing in secure execution environments, or sandboxes, for AI agents. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

About Blaxel and Baseten

Blaxel, a San Francisco-based startup, creates sandboxes utilizing microVMs, offering significantly faster spin-up and resumption times compared to competitors. Baseten, founded in 2019, has raised over $2bn and recently secured a $1.5bn Series F round, valuing the company at $13bn.

Blaxel’s Technology

Blaxel’s sandboxes suspend and resume in just 25 milliseconds and can remain idle for extended periods at minimal cost. Their platform includes a distributed filesystem for agents to share and a networking layer connecting agents to various tools and servers.

Acquisition Details

Under the agreement, Blaxel will continue operating independently, and its product will remain unchanged. Baseten plans to develop new products based on Blaxel’s technology, starting with sandboxes, expanding their support for code execution, tool use, and session persistence.

"Agents need models, but they also need a secure environment… that’s fast, scalable, and reliable enough for production," said Amir Haghighat, Baseten’s co-founder and CTO.

Blaxel’s Vision

Paul Sinaï, Blaxel’s co-founder and CEO, expressed, "We started Blaxel because agents need environments designed to work alongside the models powering them."

Baseten’s Acquisition History

This acquisition follows Baseten’s previous deal with Parsed, a reinforcement learning startup, in December 2025. Their clients include notable companies like Abridge, Clay, Cursor, Lovable, Mercor, and OpenEvidence.

Conclusion (by Cristian Dina)

As a tech enthusiast and author of "King of Networking," I find this acquisition intriguing, showcasing the rapid evolution of AI infrastructure. Baseten’s investment in Blaxel underscores the growing importance of secure and efficient sandboxes in the AI landscape.
