Bunkerhill Health Raises $55M for Healthcare AI Agents
Bunkerhill Health raised $25 million in a Series B round led by Khosla Ventures, bringing its total funding to $55 million. The company aims to deploy AI agents within hospitals to address various challenges, from long wait times to missed follow-ups and paperwork.
What Bunkerhill Builds
Bunkerhill offers a platform called Carebricks that enables hospitals to create custom AI agents for specific issues. The platform integrates with 15 health systems, including prominent institutions like the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and Intermountain Health. It utilizes nine FDA-cleared clinical algorithms covering conditions such as silent heart-valve disease and osteoporosis risk.
Personal Motivation
The company’s inception stems from personal experience. Co-founder Nishith Khandwala started the project at Stanford in 2017 but almost gave up when hospitals rejected his ideas. In 2020, his father suffered a heart attack, and a cardiologist later revealed that an old scan had already indicated the risk, suggesting earlier intervention could have saved his life.
Results and Caveats
At UT Medical Branch, Bunkerhill’s AI agents have achieved notable successes:
- One agent identified an imminent risk in a patient with coronary scans, leading to a triple bypass surgery.
- Nephrology wait times were cut by over 50%, and lung findings were followed up 80% faster.
However, the field of healthcare AI is not without challenges. Accuracy and privacy concerns, as well as legal issues, such as a lawsuit against Mayo Clinic over AI oversight, highlight the need to maintain the doctor-patient bond.
A Crowded but Well-Funded Field
Bunkerhill joins a wave of healthcare AI investments, competing with companies like Neko Health. Its investor, Vinod Khosla, acknowledges that while technology was never the bottleneck, successfully implementing AI in hospitals was. "Bunkerhill closed that gap," he said.
