ByteDance Signs Copyright Pact with Hollywood’s MPA to Rein in AI Video Tool

The TikTok owner has agreed a pact with the Motion Picture Association (MPA), the trade body for major US studios, to strengthen copyright protections on its AI image and video generators, effectively ending a standoff that began when the studios accused ByteDance of building a tool for wholesale infringement.

The agreement covers Seedance, ByteDance’s video-generation model, and Seedream, its image counterpart, which power AI features within TikTok, CapCut editor, and Dreamina app.

ByteDance claims newer versions of these models already include stronger intellectual property safeguards, though the specifics remain undisclosed, and both parties have pledged to continue cooperating as the technology evolves.

This détente follows a bitter dispute. In February, after Seedance 2.0 launched, the MPA issued a cease-and-desist letter, calling the tool an engine of “systemic infringement” that violated copyright in its design. Individual studios, including Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros., Paramount, and Sony, also voiced concerns.

The MPA’s complaint had two main points:

  • Outputs: Seedance could generate recognizable copyrighted characters and celebrity likenesses on demand.

  • Inputs: ByteDance trained the model on studio content without permission.

This week’s pact primarily addresses the first issue, providing filters to prevent outputs that violate copyright. The question of using studio content as training data for the models remains unresolved.

While this deal offers a victory for studios struggling to regulate AI technology, it has significant limitations:

  • Undisclosed Terms: The specific safeguards implemented remain confidential, making their effectiveness difficult to assess.
  • Enforcement Challenges: Enforcing these safeguards across TikTok, CapCut, and Dreamina at their massive scale poses logistical challenges.

Despite these reservations, the agreement sets a precedent for future deals between AI developers and Hollywood studios, marking a shift from confrontation to negotiation in the AI copyright landscape.
