ByteDance quietly makes $4bn a year from AI. It just broke up an app to make more.

ByteDance: China’s AI Leader with $4 Billion in Revenue

ByteDance now makes about $4 billion a year from artificial intelligence, the largest figure any Chinese company has publicly claimed, according to the South China Morning Post. To solidify its lead, it is integrating Lark, its Slack-style workplace app, into Doubao, its chatbot, and cloud business.

A Strategic Restructure

In a recent internal memo, ByteDance announced plans to absorb Lark into existing AI teams. Lark's product team will merge with Doubao's under Zhao Qi, while sales and support staff will join ByteDance’s cloud arm, Volcano Engine, and its engineers will be integrated into Flow, a division focused on AI applications.

Focusing on the Future

This restructuring demonstrates that ByteDance sees chatbots and cloud services as the future, not office suites. The company aims for "stronger AI product competitiveness and customer service capabilities."

A Chinese Lead with Global Implications

While $4 billion in AI revenue is impressive, it pales in comparison to American leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. However, it highlights the significant gap between US and Chinese AI development.

A Bold Bet on AI

ByteDance's strategy involves investing heavily across every layer of AI technology, from cutting-edge models and its Seedance video generator to infrastructure and chips. This bold bet includes using AI to produce short dramas in China, with a market expected to reach $5.9 billion this year.
