Cursor’s $7 India Plan: Powered by Its Own AI Models
Cursor has cut its India price to $7 per month for AI coding, offering a new ₹649 plan sold exclusively in India. This is a significant move, as it localizes pricing for the first time and caters to India’s thriving developer community.
Why such a low price?
The plan utilizes Cursor’s own AI models, Composer and Grok 4.5, instead of relying on OpenAI or Anthropic’s frontier systems. This strategy enables Cursor to maintain profitability at a fraction of the Pro price.
"We felt that we had an opportunity there to right-size the commercial model and drive scale," Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, explained to TechCrunch.
A Strategically Priced Discount
This discount comes at a revealing time. Cursor’s customers are negotiating price hikes in contract talks, as the company raises enterprise rates. However, this isn’t contradictory but rather a calculated strategy: offering discounts where they gain scale and increasing prices where they have pricing power.
Competing with OpenAI and Anthropic
Cursor joins a trend among major AI firms targeting India’s growing developer base. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go at a sub-$5 price point in India before rolling it out globally, while Anthropic localized Claude’s pricing for the country this month.
Cursor is also expanding its presence in India by hiring sales, support, and government affairs staff in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Green hints that localised pricing could extend to other regions if the Indian model succeeds.
A New Owner on the Horizon
These developments come as SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere, in a $60 billion all-stock deal set to close this quarter. Despite the pending ownership change, Green assures that Cursor will operate independently until the deal closes, and the India plans were initiated before the agreement.
