In just 48 hours, DeepSeek made three significant moves: shipping its flagship model out of preview, announcing a rival to Claude Code, and quadrupling its peak prices. Interestingly, they subsequently deleted their own announcement.
The Pricing Strategy
Starting August 13, 2026, DeepSeek-V4-Pro costs $3.96 at peak, up from the previous $0.87. V4-Flash goes from $0.28 to $1.32. These off-peak rates are halved, offering $1.98 and $0.66, respectively.
This new pricing strategy is a significant shift, as developers previously paid $0.87 for off-peak V4-Pro. The new discount rate is more than double the old price.
Building a Claude Code Rival
On Thursday, DeepSeek released a developer preview of DeepSeek Harness v0.1. A harness, in this context, is the framework that allows an AI agent to perform real-world tasks like reading files, editing code, and browsing the web.
DeepSeek’s move signals their intention to create cutting-edge agentic products from their models. They claim their harness uses an open architecture, allowing users to integrate components from other companies, including models from competitors.
This open approach contrasts with American rivals like Anthropic (who sells Claude Code), who reportedly hard-code their products. DeepSeek’s strategy is to own the workspace rather than the engine, making their models a component that can be easily swapped out.
The Announcement and Its Vanishing Act
DeepSeek ended the preview for DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813 this week with a brief website statement highlighting enhanced agent capabilities. However, by Thursday afternoon, the statement had disappeared, leaving developers to ponder the change.
This abrupt deletion, coupled with the price increase, has left some developers unimpressed, raising questions about DeepSeek’s intentions and communication strategy.
