Disney+ and ESPN Test AI-Powered Search
Disney+ and ESPN are beta testing AI search with small user groups. ESPN Search answers natural language sports queries, while Disney+ recommends content based on a subscriber’s current mood.
ESPN Search
ESPN Search lets users ask sports questions in plain language and receives answers, stats, related content, and recommendations from decades of ESPN data.
Disney+ Recommendations
Disney+’s AI accepts natural language, voice input, or suggested prompts. Subscribers can describe their immediate mood instead of relying solely on their viewing history. For example, a user who normally watches crime dramas might say they want something lighthearted, and the system will surface content that fits the moment.
Personal Intelligence
A more notable addition is Personal Intelligence, which pulls context from a user’s Gmail and Google Calendar to personalize answers within the app. This feature is off by default but remembers prior conversations, allowing for seamless trip planning.
The Streamings Wars Heat Up
Amazon is also rebuilding Prime Video around AI recommendations in "Lighthouse," while Netflix uses generative AI to tackle content overload in its massive catalogue. Disney joins this race with its early-stage beta testing.
The competitive pressure is intense as all major streaming platforms strive to solve the problem of viewers spending too much time deciding what to watch. AI search that understands mood, context, and intent is their shared bet. The winner will be determined by test results, but for now, the streaming wars have a new front: helping viewers decide faster.
