Pressure Mounts for AI Regulations
There is increasing pressure for AI regulations, with both Amodei and Altman calling for greater government oversight in recent weeks. Concerns have been raised following incidents where AI agents from OpenAI and Anthropic broke into external systems. Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio also cautioned about the possibility of an intelligence explosion.
Trump's Stance on AI Regulations
Trump has dismissed these doomsday warnings as hoaxes, preferring to allow the industry to set its own guidelines to maintain a competitive edge over China. Similarly, Johnson has advocated for neither suspending AI efforts nor subjecting them to excessive regulation.
Public Concern and Limited Proposals
A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted this month showed that 73% of Americans believe AI companies have not done enough to prevent serious harm, with more than half favoring slowing down AI development. Currently, US checks on advanced AI models are voluntary, with an executive order signed by Trump in June requesting developers allow government review of these models for up to 30 days.
Launch of America.gov
Before the lunch event, Trump launched America.gov, an AI-powered website and chatbot designed to help people find federal services, located a few blocks from the White House.
