Europe’s finance ministers are about to discuss an AI model none of them can access

Euro-area Finance Ministers to Discuss Access to Anthropic's AI Model

April 30, 2026 - 6:43 pm

Summary: Euro-area finance ministers will meet with banking supervisors on Monday to discuss Anthropic’s Mythos AI model. Notably, no EU government has direct access to this technology which can uncover zero-day vulnerabilities in major operating systems and browsers. The discussion arises as the Bundesbank pushes for EU access and the White House uses Mythos through the NSA while opposing Anthropic's expansion plans.

The Technology Behind Mythos

Anthropic introduced Claude Mythos Preview on April 7 under a restricted program, Project Glasswing. This AI model can:

  • Autonomously discover and exploit zero-day vulnerabilities in various operating systems and browsers.
  • Identify thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities, including older bugs previously unknown to security teams.

Mozilla, one of the access partners, reported that Mythos found 271 Firefox vulnerabilities in a single evaluation, surpassing previous records.

Dual Nature of AI Model

While powerful for defensive cybersecurity, the model's capabilities can also be used offensively by malicious actors. Anthropic has limited access due to these dual-use concerns, but this restriction creates an imbalance as some organizations remain unaware of their systems' vulnerabilities. This raises questions about equitable and effective cybersecurity measures across Europe.
