Fireworks Raises $1.5 Billion to Build Specialized Intelligence
Fireworks has raised a $1.5 billion Series D at a $17.5 billion valuation, betting that every company will build its own specialized intelligence rather than rent a model from a big lab.
What Fireworks Offers
Fireworks runs open models for other companies, then helps them fine-tune those models on their unique data. They call this "specialized intelligence": a model tailored by the knowledge specific to one business.
Market Trends and Impact
The AI economy has traditionally relied on renting models from large labs. However, Fireworks’ thesis suggests that this is changing as companies seek to build their own AI capabilities. Index Ventures noted that revenue has passed $1 billion annually, with 40 trillion tokens processed daily—more than both Google and OpenAI combined, according to CNBC’s figures.
Powerful Support for the Approach
CEO Lin Qiao emphasized the choice between allowing a few labs to control intelligence or enabling everyone to build their own. This view is supported by prominent figures like Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Palantir’s Alex Karp, who advocate for owning the models that make a company unique.
Competition in the Market
Fireworks competes with Together AI, Baseten, and neocloud rivals in the inference space, while also expanding into training. Their main risk lies in potential concentration; previously, Cursor accounted for half their revenue, but Qiao assures a broader customer base now. She aims to grow headcount from 200 to 600 by year-end, emphasizing their accelerated growth trajectory.
