Google Workers Rally at Mountain View HQ, Demanding Job Security
The Alphabet Workers Union delivered a petition signed by more than 4,500 staff, asking for guaranteed severance and an end to forced-ranking quotas.

Just after 9am on Thursday, roughly 100 Google workers gathered outside the company’s Mountain View headquarters, placards in hand, to press a demand that would once have sounded quaint: let us keep our jobs.
The rally, organised by the Alphabet Workers Union, ended with the delivery of a petition to chief executive Sundar Pichai and three senior leaders. The union, operating as CWA Local 9009, has spent 18 months building its Googlers for Job Security campaign, undeterred by earlier claims that the company developed a surveillance tool to monitor unionising staff.
This is not an isolated incident. Meta employees also staged a protest over mouse-tracking before their company’s latest round of cuts.
Union Demands:
- Guaranteed severance for anyone laid off, set no lower than packages offered in January 2023.
- Voluntary exit packages before any involuntary cuts.
- Drop forced-distribution performance ratings, known as GRAD quotas, which grade staff against a fixed curve rather than on merit alone.
- Allow workers on visas to take severance as extended paid leave, buying time to find a new sponsor.
The campaign launched inside the company in January 2025 with 400 signatures, grew to 2,000 by April, and staged a Valentine’s Day of Action across 10 offices earlier this year. The backdrop is three years of contraction, including Google’s 2023 job cuts that reduced its workforce by roughly 6%.
Much of the current unease revolves around how AI will reshape work, rather than any single announced cut. This anxiety extends beyond one campus, with recent Chinese court rulings stating that AI replacement is not lawful grounds for dismissal.
The rally was framed as a fight over conditions, not just headcount, and positioned as a long-term effort rather than a one-off protest. The union argues that a guaranteed severance floor allows people to take creative risks even as the ground beneath their roles shifts with AI integration.
