HBO Max comes to India through exclusive JioHotstar deal at 50 cents a month

HBO Max Launches in India via JioHotstar Partnership at ₹49 per Month

HBO Max has launched in India through an exclusive partnership with JioHotstar, following a $8.5 billion merger between Reliance Industries and Walt Disney. The deal offers a dedicated HBO Max-branded hub to JioHotstar's over 100 million paid subscribers for ₹49 per month (roughly 50 US cents), making it one of the most affordable ways globally to access HBO's extensive library.

What's Available?

The hub includes content from HBO, Max Originals, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios. Notable launch titles are the third season of Euphoria and House of the Dragon Season 3, alongside an upcoming HBO Original series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The film library comprises the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings collections, as well as DC Universe titles.

Two long-absentee shows are also part of the package: Friends and The Big Bang Theory return to Indian streaming for the first time since their previous licensing deals expired, accompanied by The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and The Flash.

Why India?

James Gibbons, President of Asia-Pacific at Warner Bros. Discovery, stated, "India is one of the most vibrant streaming markets globally, and in JioHotstar we have a partner with unmatched scale and a deep understanding of local audiences."

Market Dominance

JioHotstar boasts approximately 390 million monthly active users, controlling around 85% of India's streaming landscape. Following the merger, JioHotstar consolidated its position as the dominant player in the market. With cricket rights to the Indian Premier League and ICC tournaments, no competitor can match its offerings.

Netflix holds 92 million monthly active users in India, while Amazon Prime Video has 67 million. However, JioHotstar's dominance is growing; it saw a 17% increase in user base over the past year.

Economic Considerations

The ₹49 monthly price point includes access to both the HBO Max hub and JioHotstar's extensive international content library. This affordable pricing reflects the challenging economic realities of India's streaming market.
