Hong Kong Educators Urge Social Media Ban for Under-16s
Hong Kong educators and a lawmaker are advocating for a ban on social media access for children under 16, citing addiction as the "biggest problem facing education." A survey reveals that 62% of Hong Kong residents support this legislative ban, rising to 76% among parents.
The government, however, has no plans to legislate, according to its technology chief, due to enforcement challenges, cross-border jurisdiction issues, and concerns about harming the city’s tech ecosystem. Despite this, other countries like Australia, UK, France, Spain, and Portugal are moving forward with similar measures.
Hong Kong’s approach focuses on education, health guidance, and monitoring international developments rather than direct legislation. The enforcement problem is highlighted by Australia’s age-verification trial, which showed potential inaccuracies of up to three years. Hong Kong’s fragmented digital landscape, with platforms based in diverse jurisdictions, adds further complexity.
While public opinion strongly supports a ban, the government’s stance remains firm for now, choosing to study international legislation and its outcomes rather than implement its own measures.
