IBM Acquires Quantum Computing Lab and Unveils Breakthrough Six Days Later
IBM recently agreed to acquire HRL Laboratories, a research lab developing a unique type of qubit that IBM does not. Just days after the acquisition, HRL published a groundbreaking result in Nature.
Silicon Quantum Processor with Self-Running Error Correction
HRL Laboratories has presented a silicon quantum processor capable of self-running error correction, addressing a critical bottleneck in quantum computing. Traditionally, control electronics reside at room temperature, requiring complex wiring to reach the extremely cold environment needed for qubits. HRL solved this problem by integrating the controller into the fridge next to the qubits, utilizing a custom chip operating at 4 kelvin. This approach significantly reduces control errors and enables the processor to run without real-time assistance from external electronics.
Overcoming Technical Challenges
The integration of warm control electronics with cold qubits is counterintuitive, but HRL achieved this by employing a new superconducting ribbon cable that minimizes heat transfer while transmitting control signals to the qubits. As a result, HRL reports a tenfold reduction in control errors compared to previous demonstrations and operation times below a microsecond per operation. The error rate further improved when more qubits were added to their error-correcting code, aligning with their models.
Cost-Effective Quantum Computing
HRL emphasizes that this technology is not just powerful but also manufacturable. Using standard semiconductor processes for the qubit chip, cable, and controller could lead to low production costs, making quantum computing more accessible. Rob Vasquez, CEO of HRL, argues, "Our goal is to build these powerful computers using standard microchip production lines and fit each one inside a single refrigerator… This approach will keep production costs low."
