IonQ to Acquire Cybersecurity Firm Elisity for Up to $1.3 Billion in Stock
IonQ has agreed to acquire Elisity in an all-stock deal valued up to $1.3 billion, with up to $150 million contingent on Elisity's performance. The Maryland-based quantum computing company aims to strengthen its security offerings to protect against future quantum and AI-assisted attacks.
What Elisity Does:
Founded in 2019, Elisity develops software to prevent attackers and ransomware from spreading across company networks. Key clients include hospitals and healthcare providers. IonQ claims Elisity serves over 100 customers, including a growing number of Fortune 500 companies, with an impressive customer retention rate.
James Winebrenner, Elisity's CEO, will continue leading the business post-acquisition, with the deal expected to close by the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval.
"We will be well positioned to help customers protect critical infrastructure and enterprise networks throughout the transition to the quantum era." - Niccolo de Masi, IonQ CEO
"Our customers need to prioritize post-quantum cryptography initiatives while securing existing assets." - James Winebrenner, Elisity CEO
A String of Acquisitions:
IonQ, valued at approximately $16 billion, is the largest publicly traded company focused exclusively on quantum computing. Notable acquisitions include chipmaker SkyWater for $1.8 billion in January and UK startup Oxford Ionics for $1.1 billion in 2022.
IonQ's security division already offers quantum-resistant tools and has built quantum-safe national networks in several countries. As quantum computers advance, they pose a risk to current encryption methods.
A Competitive Market:
Rival quantum and post-quantum security firms are also making headlines. France's Pasqal recently went public via a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC), while IonQ is among those in DARPA's final test phase for practical quantum computers.
