Jensen Huang has accepted an invitation to join the advisory board of Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management, according to a Financial Times report.
The board is chaired by Apple chief executive Tim Cook and includes Elon Musk (Tesla), Michael Dell (Dell), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), Mark Zuckerberg (Meta), Jamie Dimon (JPMorgan), and Larry Fink (BlackRock).
While the CEO of Nvidia’s acceptance might seem routine, its timing has sparked geopolitical speculation. Huang accompanied US President Donald Trump on a state visit to China and accepted the invitation shortly after.
This acceptance coincides with heightened US-China tensions regarding AI technology and Nvidia chip exports. Huang himself has been vocal about the potential risks of Chinese AI labs utilizing Huawei chips. His advisory board seat at Tsinghua, coupled with these recent events, adds another layer to this complex geopolitical dialogue.
The Tsinghua SEM advisory board facilitates ongoing communication between US corporations and senior Chinese economic policymakers. It provides a platform for exchange and access to insights regarding China’s technological landscape.
For Nvidia, this comes as the company navigates export control restrictions on its most advanced GPUs in China since 2022, with ongoing adjustments to its product offerings and pricing strategies.
