Li Auto Accelerates European Launch

Li Auto to Show and Sell Li 6 in Europe This Quarter

Li Auto will display the Li 6, its first European model, at the upcoming Paris Motor Show and begin sales in the fourth quarter, six years ahead of its original plan. The company is only introducing battery-powered models due to the EU’s duty on Chinese electric cars, which includes extended-range vehicles.

Li Auto, founded by Li Xiang, initially intended to enter the European market in 2028. However, the company has reversed its strategy and is now accelerating its European expansion.

Paris Motor Show and Beyond

The Li 6, known as the i6 crossover in China, will be sold as the Li 6 in Europe, with the "Auto" dropped from the company name. Over a dozen Chinese car brands, including BYD, XPeng, Zeekr, and Leapmotor, will also be exhibited at the Paris Motor Show.

EU Duty and Market Dynamics

The EU duty on Chinese electric cars, which includes both battery-only and range-extended models, has impacted Li Auto’s product strategy. While the company’s extended-range cars are popular in China, the EU duty does not differentiate between plug-in hybrids and battery-only vehicles.

As a result, Li Auto is focusing on battery-powered models for Europe, while sending its extended-range cars to the Middle East and Central Asia. This decision is further influenced by charging infrastructure and market demand.

Pricing and Uncertainties

The pricing structure for the Li 6 in Europe remains undisclosed, and the company has not specified the countries where it will be sold. The cost will depend on whether Li Auto is considered a cooperating or non-cooperating exporter, with potential rates ranging from 20.7% to 35.3%, in addition to the standard 10%.

In China, the i6 starts at approximately $36,000, positioning it against the Tesla Model Y. Adjusting for a European price structure and potential duties, the Li 6 could compete with models like the BMW iX3.

Conclusion

Li Auto has set a clear timeline for its European launch, but several unknowns remain, including pricing, market entry, and sales targets. The company’s success in Europe will be crucial for its global growth strategy.
