Lucid Recalls 27,185 Air Sedans Over Software Fuse Issue
Lucid is recalling 27,185 Air sedans due to a software-controlled eFuse that can cause exterior lighting circuits to overheat. This recall is the largest for Lucid and the fourth for the Air this year.
The cars feature no conventional fuse on their exterior lighting circuits. Instead, the software logic allowed them to stay energized at excess amperage levels. Three fires and four smoke incidents have been recorded before the recall filing, with the first incident occurring in a Lucid-owned car in June 2023.
Owners are advised to park away from structures until the update is applied. The remedy was released in July, and by that time, 20,719 of the affected cars had already been updated.
This recall highlights the challenges of software updates in the automotive industry, especially regarding safety standards. In the EU, software updates for newly registered vehicles are regulated since July 2024, requiring a certified system and assessment for any changes.
