Mastercard Takes Down Payments Across Australia Due to Scheduled Update

August 16, 2026 - 8:39 am

Mastercard transactions were declined across Australia on Saturday afternoon following a scheduled system update, with over 1,900 outage reports logged by mid-afternoon. Mastercard confirmed the issue has been resolved and all systems are now operating normally.

The Impact

Commonwealth Bank customers reported payment failures, and Downdetector recorded more than 1,900 reports by 3:27 pm in Sydney, with transfer and mobile banking issues being the most common.

Asha Thompson, a bar manager in Melbourne's Collingwood, expressed her concern: "Today, cash is king," she said, "We've got a whole night to get through and it's the biggest night of the week. It could be 40% of our takings."

A Testimony to Cash's Resurgence

The outage highlights the continued reliance on cash, contrary to the cashless society narrative. Reserve Bank research reveals cash represented 15% of payments by volume in 2025, up from 13% in 2022, with more than three-quarters of Australians carrying some cash, with a median of around A$65.

The reasons for this are multifaceted. The RBA found people hold cash due to concerns about the reliability of electronic payments, and a third stated they would face hardship or significant inconvenience if cash became scarce.

A Global Concern

Europe is addressing similar worries. The European Central Bank has selected 36 payment firms for its digital euro pilot. Resilience and reducing concentration risks are key aspects of this initiative, as evidenced by the UK's designation of Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Oracle as critical third parties to its financial system.

This particular outage, though inconvenient, underscored how ordinary the cause was—a scheduled system update.
