Medical AI was meant to help. This week it replaced nurses and dodged its own checks

Medical AI: Replacing Nurses and Evading Checks

In New York, a dozen Montefiore nurses say they were replaced by AI software, in breach of a contract they had just struck for. In Minnesota, a former Mayo Clinic leader alleges in a lawsuit that a hospital AI tool with a 67% error rate was pushed past its own safeguards. Both point to the same gap, between what medical AI promises and how it is being deployed.

The Stories Unfold

July 14, 2026 – Two stories emerged this week highlighting the contrasting reality of medical AI deployment:

  • Nurses Replaced by AI: In New York, nurses, including Marilyn Shuler, who spent 39 years at Montefiore hospital, were suddenly laid off. They claim AI software took over their role in utilization review, a breach of their recently won contract.
  • AI Tool’s High Error Rate: Traci Tamiko Eto, a former Mayo Clinic employee, filed a lawsuit alleging that the hospital rushed an AI assistant called MAYA into service with inadequate oversight, despite high error rates (up to 67%).

A Widening Fault Line

These incidents represent two sides of the same issue. Healthcare, where AI’s benefits should be most evident, also exposes its dangers most starkly.

  • Embracing AI in Healthcare: Medical AI promises improved efficiency and patient care but delivers risks when deployed recklessly.
  • Who Bears the Risk? While Montefiore hospital retains the financial benefits, patients bear the potential consequences of mismanaged AI implementation.

A Growing Concern

The broader trend is unsettling:

  • Employment Shifts: Companies like Allianz and Thomson Reuters are replacing staff with AI models.
  • Eroding Expertise: Research reveals that reliance on AI can subtly diminish the skills of professionals, potentially cutting careers short.
  • Unregulated Risks: States like Utah have allowed AI to renew prescriptions without doctor supervision, raising questions about regulation and oversight.
