According to its 2026 sustainability report, greenhouse-gas emissions increased by 25.1% compared to the previous year, reaching 20.3 million tonnes. Not all of the emission increase can be blamed on new pollution. Microsoft has stopped accounting for short-term renewable energy certificates that previously inflated its emissions figures.
However, even when these adjustments are made, the true picture is still concerning. The report shows that scope 2 emissions, primarily from electricity purchases, jumped significantly, reflecting the environmental footprint of Microsoft’s data centre expansion.
The company acknowledges some positive steps, such as matching 100% of its annual electricity use with renewable energy and improving server recycling rates.
Yet, these efforts are overshadowed by the rapid growth of its AI and cloud infrastructure, which requires substantial power, materials, and resources.
