Microsoft reportedly is reorganising the leadership of its Azure cloud unit

Microsoft Reportedly Reorganizing Azure Cloud Leadership

Microsoft is reshaping the leadership of Azure, its cloud computing business, and merging some of its units, as reported by The Information on Monday.

Scott Guthrie, who runs Microsoft’s cloud and AI group, informed staff about the changes that same day, according to the report. As part of the reorganization, Arun Ulag, previously in charge of Azure’s databases, is taking on a wider role. Other sources indicate he will also head the core Azure business and its engineering teams.

It remains unclear how many teams or staff these changes affect, or when they will take effect.

These developments occur amidst a busy period for Azure. On the same day, Guthrie announced in a Microsoft blog post the company's plans to expand its Maia AI chip systems. Microsoft also declared its chips will become the primary platform for running its AI services, including Copilot, starting in 2027.

Microsoft recently unveiled the Maia 300, the third generation of its AI chip, with deployments expected to begin next year measured in gigawatts. In September, Microsoft also changed its reporting structure, consolidating its business segments and providing a separate figure for Azure for the first time. Azure generated $29.4 billion in the June quarter, a 42% increase year-over-year.

Azure’s leadership has undergone previous changes this year as well. In April, Eric Boyd, who led Microsoft’s Azure AI platform, left to become head of infrastructure at Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models.

Microsoft will share more details about the Maia 300 at its Ignite conference in San Francisco next month.
