Microsoft will stop syncing OneDrive on older Windows 10 versions next month

Microsoft to Discontinue OneDrive Sync for Older Windows 10 Versions

From August 15, OneDrive on Windows 10 versions prior to 22H2 will receive no updates, fixes, or security patches. The service won’t immediately stop working, but Microsoft warns that "future functionality is not guaranteed."

Windows 10 22H2, the final version of Windows 10, will continue receiving OneDrive sync updates until October 10, 2028.

Microsoft explained the move aligns with its "Windows lifecycle policy" and allows it to focus investments on supported operating systems.

Users on affected versions have options: upgrade to Windows 10 22H2, switch to Windows 11, or use OneDrive’s web interface.

Alternatives like Nextcloud support Windows 10 back to version 1809 and run on Linux as well. Microsoft’s restructuring under Nadella emphasizes AI-first products, leading to this consolidation of resources.

Key Takeaways:

  • Discontinuing Support: OneDrive sync for older Windows 10 versions (pre-22H2) ends August 15.
  • No More Updates: No updates, fixes, or security patches after that date.
  • Limited Functionality: Future functionality is not guaranteed.
  • Windows 10 22H2 Exception: This version receives sync updates until October 2028.
  • Alternatives Available: Upgrade to a supported version, switch to Windows 11, or use the web interface.
