Americans Under 30: Growing Concerns about AI

Most Americans under 30 are now more worried than excited about AI

A majority of American adults under 30 are now more concerned than excited by Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in August 2026. The findings reveal that 55% of this age group expresses concern, marking the first time since 2021 that a majority has held this viewpoint. Notably, 73% of Americans under 30 expect AI to lead to fewer job opportunities over the next two decades, with only 5% anticipating it to create more jobs.

A Shifting Perspective

The shift in attitudes is significant because previously, this demographic was the most enthusiastic about AI. Since 2021, concern has risen from 37% to 52%, while the percentage of Americans overall who are concerned has also increased.

Global Concerns Resonate

A European Commission survey mirrors these findings, indicating that younger, lower-income, and less-educated workers across Europe are particularly fearful of AI’s impact on employment.

AI Adoption and its Impact

In the EU, 54% of respondents use AI in some capacity, with 27% of workers incorporating it into their job duties. A Harvard study suggests that AI-native startups tend to hire more experienced staff rather than juniors, which aligns with concerns about job displacement.

The Pressure on Entry-Level Roles

The data highlights a particular concern: internship and junior roles, traditional entry points into careers, are being affected first by the AI boom. While causation remains debatable, the sentiment is clear, presenting businesses with a significant challenge.

By the Numbers:

  • 55% of Americans under 30 are concerned about AI.
  • 73% expect fewer jobs due to AI in the next two decades.
  • 5% believe AI will create more jobs.
