Ofcom says it still has concerns over how X removes illegal hate content

Ofcom's Concerns Regarding X's Content Moderation

Ofcom, the UK's online safety regulator, has expressed ongoing concerns about X's effectiveness in removing illegal hate and terror content, despite improvements in review times.

Faster Response Times

In May, X committed to reviewing reported illegal content within 24 hours on average and assessing at least 85% of these posts within 48 hours. According to Ofcom's quarterly report, X is now meeting these targets, acting faster than earlier in the year.

Concerns Remain

However, Ofcom remains uncertain about X's ability to remove illegal posts and the extent of its collaboration with external experts, as promised. Further analysis is expected early next year.

Grok Investigation Update

The update also includes progress on Ofcom's investigation into X, which began in January over reports of the Grok chatbot creating sexual deepfakes. Ofcom will now decide if X has met its legal obligations to protect UK residents from illegal content.

Changes to Grok App

SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) has implemented limits to its Grok app, preventing users in the UK from viewing, creating, or sharing adult content using its image tool. Companion chatbots like 'Ani' are also no longer permitted to engage in sexual chats with UK users.

Increasing Pressure

With growing pressure from UK and Irish regulators, X faces scrutiny over age checks and sexual content creation.
