OpenAI buys camera startup Glass Imaging for over $300m, WSJ reports

OpenAI Acquires Glass Imaging for Over $300 Million

OpenAI has bought Glass Imaging, a startup specializing in AI-powered smartphone camera technology, for a staggering value of over $300 million, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). This acquisition marks a significant milestone, as it is three times the company's valuation from last year.

Two former Apple engineers, Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, founded Glass Imaging in 2019, based in Los Altos, California. The company had previously raised $30 million from investors before the recent acquisition.

Glass Imaging's Innovation

GlassAI, the startup's software, trains custom neural networks for each camera system, aiming to enhance image quality through the reversal of "lens aberrations and sensor imperfections." By doing so, Glass Imaging strives to bring "DSLR quality to smartphones." The software operates at the moment of shutter release, unlike post-editing methods.

Ziv Attar, CEO of Glass Imaging, co-created the technology behind iPhone's Portrait Mode, while Tom Bishop also has a rich history at Apple, having led computational photography work after founding LinX Imaging in 2011, which was acquired by Apple in 2015.

OpenAI's Hardware Ambitions

This acquisition is part of OpenAI's expanding hardware plans. In 2025, they bought io, Jony Ive's device startup, for a substantial $6.5 billion. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president, has hinted at a "family of devices," with reports suggesting a screen-free smart speaker as the first launch. Other rumored products include AI-focused phones and earbuds.

Glass Imaging is the latest in a series of OpenAI acquisitions this year, following NextSlide, a slide deck startup, and Northslope, which places engineers within client businesses.
