Palantir gets £21m from Britain’s grid operator, no competition

Palantir Secures £21m Contract with Britain’s Energy Operator

Britain’s publicly owned energy system operator has awarded Palantir a £21.2m contract without competition. The move justifies the decision based on Palantir’s proprietary architecture, migration risks, and retraining costs associated with leaving their platform, Foundry. This comes after France and Germany attempted to replace Palantir’s Maven system due to its exclusive licensing and specialized knowledge required for operation.

Justification:

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) used a direct award under Section 41 of the Procurement Act 2023, citing Schedule 5, paragraph 6, which allows for exceptions to competitive bidding for technical reasons. The contract covers licensing and support for NESO’s processes running on Palantir’s Foundry platform: Connections and Skip Rates.

Key Points:

  • Contract Value: £17,700,270 (before VAT) or £21,240,324 with VAT included.
  • Term: From September 6, 2026, to July 31, 2027, with possible six-month extensions until July 31, 2028.
  • Rationale for No Competition: NESO argues that migrating to another supplier is "not possible without significant cost, resource commitment and delivery risk". This includes redeveloping analytics environments, migrating data, securing new systems, and retraining staff.

Additional Details:

NESO states it is conducting a competitive procurement for a replacement system while acknowledging the interim contract has extensions built-in. A separate notice mentions a Strategic Enterprise Modelling Capability project running from July 2027 to July 2032 with potential extension.

The transparency notice, published on August 26, 2026, received public scrutiny for just over a week before the contract was signed on September 8, 2026.
