Patreon lays off 20% of staff and dances around AI

Patreon has cut 93 jobs, accounting for a fifth of its workforce. Its founder, Jack Conte, insists that artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t to blame for these layoffs. He argues that AI has "fundamentally transformed" the company’s operations but is not replacing human workers. This statement echoes across various tech companies facing similar challenges in 2026.

Despite reporting strong performance with over 300,000 creators earning on the platform and billions paid out annually, Patreon is downsizing. According to its CEO, this move is not due to a struggling business but rather a response to a changing market over the last six months. Conte emphasizes that Patreon remains "a stable, dependable rock for our creators."

He continues by stating, "AI has fundamentally transformed the tech industry… how we work, how we build products, and how we communicate… [but] AI tools are not substitutes for the creativity, judgment, or craftsmanship" of their employees.

Despite this cautious reassurance, Conte has been more direct elsewhere, suggesting that Patreon must embrace AI or risk becoming "dead in three years."

A Growing Business with Shrinking Headcount

The discrepancy between Patreon’s thriving business and its decision to lay off staff has left some observers bewildered. However, the company aims to pivot into a "media and community network," which requires time and funding. Departing employees will receive generous benefits, including 16 weeks of pay, an additional week for every year served, healthcare until the end of the year, and a $1,500 laptop stipend.

Protecting Creators from AI

Interestingly, just a week before these layoffs, Patreon took a strong stand against AI scraping. In all-caps, its CEO announced a partnership with Cloudflare to block AI crawlers from accessing creators’ content for model training. This move highlights the platform’s efforts to protect its creators from potential negative impacts of AI while simultaneously integrating it into their operations.
