Lilian Weng Returns to OpenAI After Stepping Down from Thinking Machines Due to Health Concerns
Lilian Weng has left Thinking Machines Lab and rejoined OpenAI just days later, citing stress and illness as reasons for her initial departure.
A Health-Driven Decision
In a concise exit note, Weng stated that she had been dealing with frequent illnesses over the past seven months, beyond what her health could handle. She attributed this to the "consistent stress and workload" at Thinking Machines.
“Beyond what my health can sustain physically,” she wrote, according to Business Insider.
Weng, who co-founded Thinking Machines with Mira Murati (formerly OpenAI’s CTO), considered a narrower role within the lab but ultimately decided it wasn’t suitable. She sought a "more predictable" and "scoped" position while still contributing to AI development.
A Challenging New Role
Her return to OpenAI marks her reentry into a demanding field. Weng will be working on recursive self-improvement, a significant and contentious area within artificial intelligence (AI). This involves using AI models to create better AI models, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the field.
"The future worth building is human," she shared on X.
A Growing Trend
Weng’s health-driven exit is not an isolated incident. Fidji Simo stepped back from a top OpenAI role due to a chronic illness flare-up, and Greg Yang, co-founder of xAI, moved to an advisory position after a Lyme disease diagnosis. These leaders are prioritizing their health while the AI industry maintains its rapid pace.
A Thinning Team at Thinking Machines
This is not the first time Thinking Machines has seen departures from its founding team. By May, 13 of the lab’s original 42 members had left, including three co-founders, as Meta and OpenAI offered attractive compensation packages. Murati expressed her support for Weng’s decision to prioritize her health.
In a twist, Weng, seeking a slower pace, has found herself at the forefront of one of AI’s most complex challenges—a testament to the industry’s ability to attract talent back into its fast-paced environment.
