Space Raises $2.4M to Abolish the Hard Drive with an AI-Native Filesystem

Space, a San Francisco startup, has emerged from stealth with $2.4M in pre-seed funding from a16z's Speedrun accelerator, Golden Ventures, Northside Ventures, and a dozen angels from companies like Parsec, Sentry, Superwhisper, and Modem. Their mission: to abolish the traditional hard drive with an AI-native filesystem.

A Literally Radical Pitch

The startup aims to enable people and AI agents to access and work with petabytes of live data without using any local disk space. In theory, this means a video editor could open a project larger than their laptop, and an AI agent could efficiently traverse an entire organization's files, accessing only the relevant fragments.

The Challenge and Opportunity

Co-founder Jason Zhao emphasizes the growing need for such a solution: "Humans and agents are working across more data than any local disk can hold. They should not have to wait for files to be copied or ingested before work can begin."

This timing aligns with a broader AI boom, with startups and established companies alike investing in data storage and access layers. Space argues that the humble filesystem, the oldest abstraction in computing, is the ideal location for this access layer, as it's already understood and used by every app, device, person, and agent.

Existing Solutions and Space's Unique Approach

While tools like LucidLink and cloud drives offer on-demand access and selective sync, Space believes these were designed for human file syncing, not the machine-speed data crawling required by AI agents. They wager that a filesystem rebuilt natively for both humans and AI agents will outperform sync tools with AI additions.

Space is currently in private beta with around 100 users and teams, and claims an organic audience of over 80,000. Jonathan Lai, a general partner at a16z, sees Space as a single mechanism that can serve both human creators and AI agents, aligning with the firm's broader bet on agent infrastructure.

The Long-Term Vision

The founders' ultimate pitch is even grander: a "Space Computer" where the traditional concepts of computing, with physical hardware and files stored locally, are replaced by a distributed system that operates entirely in the cloud.
