SpaceX Closes $60 Billion Cursor Deal
SpaceX has completed its acquisition of Cursor, a deal valued at $60 billion, effective August 14, 2026. This follows a binding agreement made in June and regulatory approval.
Cursor’s Acquisition Strategy:
In a note published the same day, Cursor highlights the benefits of the acquisition: "We will have access to the largest fleet of GPUs in the world, giving us the compute to build stronger models that are also more economical to run." This strategic move allows them to offer more capable models at lower costs.
A Company Acquiring Before Closing:
Interestingly, one day before the deal closed, Cursor announced the joining of Firetiger, following their December 2025 acquisition of Graphite. This is unusual, suggesting a collaborative approach where Cursor maintains its identity while leveraging SpaceX’s computing power.
SpaceX’s Motivation:
The target is coding, positioning SpaceX against rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI, according to Bloomberg. SpaceXAI has faced challenges with limited business adoption and restructuring, but Cursor brings on-demand AI assistance, a competitive advantage.
Shared Infrastructure, Competitive Landscape:
It’s worth noting that one of SpaceX’s competitors, Anthropic, is also a customer, having agreed to a $45 billion computing deal with SpaceX. This shared infrastructure supports both SpaceX’s models and its competitors’, creating an intriguing dynamic in the AI landscape.
