Spotify launches a verified badge for artists, and AI-persona accounts won’t qualify

Spotify Launches Verified Badge to Distinguish Real Artists from AI Content

Spotify has introduced a Verified by Spotify badge, a green checkmark that will appear on artist profiles and search results, signaling authenticity and trust. This new feature aims to address the platform's recent controversies regarding AI-generated music and fake artist profiles.

Background

Over the past year, Spotify has faced criticism for allowing AI-generated music to accumulate under false or misleading artist names. Issues arose when:

  • An AI-generated band, The Velvet Sundown, appeared on users' Discover Weekly playlists without a label distinguishing it from a human act.
  • AI-generated songs were uploaded to the official Spotify pages of deceased artists, including those murdered decades ago, without consent from their estates.

While competitors like Deezer implemented AI-generated content tagging, Spotify remained relatively quiet until now. The Verified badge is its significant response to these concerns.

Eligibility for Verification

To receive the verification badge, artist profiles must meet three criteria:

  • Consistent listener activity: Intentional engagement over an extended period, not just one-time spikes.
  • Compliance with Spotify policies: Adherence to the platform's guidelines.
  • Real-world artist presence: Including concert dates, merchandise, and linked social accounts.

Critically, profiles representing AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification at this initial launch. Spotify plans to use a combination of algorithmic standards and human review to identify "real artists behaving in good faith."

Impact

At launch, over 99% of actively searched artists will be verified, representing hundreds of thousands of independent artists across various genres, career stages, and regions. Spotify emphasizes that it is deprioritizing content farms and "functional music creators whose content is primarily designed for passive or background listening."

In addition to the badge, Spotify is introducing artist detail sections (in beta) on all profiles, providing listeners with career milestones, release history, and touring information—a "nutrition facts" approach for musicians. Another feature, Artist Profile Protection (also in beta), gives artists more control over their profile content.

Spotify assures that ongoing verification will be applied to its extensive catalog of millions of artist profiles.
