Founded in 2019 by Samar Abbas (CEO) and Maxim Fateev (CTO), Temporal offers open-source software that ensures applications, including AI agents, remain operational even when something fails. Its core technology, Durable Execution, saves the application’s state at each step, allowing for seamless resumption after server crashes or service disruptions.
Temporal’s software is free to use, but they generate revenue through Temporal Cloud, a managed version of the platform. The company attributes its rapid growth in demand to businesses deploying AI agents into production, where these agents can run for extended periods and interact with numerous tools and systems, increasing potential failure points.
Business Metrics:
- Revenue Run Rate: Exceeds $250 million, a greater than 200% increase from the previous year.
- Net Dollar Retention: Consistently above 200% since February.
- Temporal Cloud Processing: Processed over 1.9 trillion actions in August, a 350% year-over-year increase.
- Customers: Serves more than 4,300 paying customers, including OpenAI, Snap, Nvidia, Netflix, JPMorgan Chase, Anysphere, Lovable, Scale AI, Salesforce, and Shopify.
OpenAI’s use of Temporal has grown by approximately 60 times in under a year, according to a blog post by Temporal.
The new funding will be allocated towards research and development, sales, and global operations, with the company’s workforce doubling to 570 employees over the past year.
Competitive Landscape:
Temporal joins a growing field of companies offering similar solutions, including Inngest, Trigger.dev, and Restate, although these rivals have raised significantly less funding. The current round reflects a significant wave of AI-focused investments in 2026, with AI companies accounting for 86% of US venture deal value in the first half of the year, according to Reuters.
