The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating claims that Tesla's robotaxis exceeded posted speed limits in active school zones, affecting approximately 1,000 vehicles. This issue, similar to one holding up Tesla's approval in Europe, raises concerns about speeding behavior.

Key Points:

  • Defect Petition Review: NHTSA is examining a petition claiming Tesla robotaxis sped through school zones while their automated driving systems were engaged.
  • Covered Vehicles: The review focuses on 2026 model year Robotaxi, Model Y, and Cybercab vehicles, estimated at 1,000 units.
  • No Crashes or Injuries: Notably, the filing records no crashes, injuries, or fatalities associated with these vehicles.
  • European Approval Delays: Speed limitations are a significant barrier for Tesla's driver-assistance software approval in the EU, with Germany advocating for capping the system at 10% over the posted limit.
  • Pending Decisions: The NHTSA review is not yet an investigation, and no deadline has been set. The outcome will determine Tesla's future regulatory hurdles both in the US and Europe.

Underlying Challenges:

  • Pedestrian Detection: A King’s College London study revealed significant accuracy disparities in pedestrian detection systems, with adults detected more reliably than children, particularly in low light conditions.
  • Safety Concerns: Similar speeding and safety issues have affected other autonomous vehicle companies like Waymo, leading to investigations and a recall.
  • Regulatory Landscape: As autonomous vehicle technologies advance, regulatory bodies worldwide grapple with defining safety standards and best practices for testing and deployment.
