Thailand approves $29bn in projects, with TikTok’s ₿842bn data-centre expansion alone worth $25bn

Thailand Approves $29 Billion in Projects, With TikTok's Data-Center Expansion

May 6, 2026 - 10:42 am

Bangkok’s Board of Investment (BOI) cleared six major investments on Wednesday. Three of them are data centers. The headline is the TikTok number, but the larger story is what Thailand is becoming inside the regional AI infrastructure trade.

Thailand's BOI and International Attention

Thailand’s BOI, an institutional body whose press releases often attract limited international attention, received significant notice on Wednesday from Bloomberg. The report revealed that the BOI had approved a single tranche of investment worth roughly $29 billion (approximately ₿958 billion at current exchange rates), with TikTok's data-center expansion taking up the lion's share.

Data Centers and Thailand's New Focus

The larger narrative, according to the report, is that Thailand has decided to compete for foreign capital through data center construction. Global hyperscalers and platform operators have taken notice, indicating Thailand as an acceptable location for their investments.

TikTok's Substantial Expansion in Thailand

TikTok’s approved project involves a substantial expansion of its existing Thai build-out:

  • Value: ₿842 billion (approximately $25 billion)
  • Scope: Server installation, data storage expansion, and processing capacity scaling across three provinces: Bangkok, Samut Prakan, and Chachoengsao.
  • Tax Incentives: Five-year corporate income tax exemption under Thailand’s BCG (Bio-Circular-Green) industrial promotion strategy.

Beyond Infrastructure: TikTok's Commitment to Thailand

While the infrastructure spend dominates headlines, The Bangkok Post reported that TikTok has also committed to developing digital literacy and e-commerce curriculum programs to support Thai entrepreneurs and the country's broader digital workforce.

Other BOI Approvals

Beyond the TikTok project, a ₿46 billion (approximately $1.4 billion) data center investment by Skyline Data Center and Cloud Services Co., a unit of the UAE-based DAMAC Group, was also approved. This project supports a 200-megawatt IT load.

Summary

The BOI's latest approvals highlight Thailand's growing importance in regional AI infrastructure. With significant investments from tech giants like TikTok and Skyline Data Center, Thailand is positioning itself as a strategic partner for foreign capital seeking to establish a presence in the region.
