Trump Discusses US Stake in AI Companies with TIME
President Donald Trump recently sat down with TIME for an interview where he addressed several topics related to artificial intelligence (AI) and the tech industry.
Nationalization vs. Government Stakes
Trump clarified his stance on nationalizing America's leading AI labs, stating that while he ruled out nationalization, there is a possibility of the US government taking stakes in companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. He drew parallels to Intel's 10% government stake, which he said was worth around $60 billion.
Views on AI Safety
In response to questions about his disagreements with Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, Trump expressed that their views on AI safety differ from media portrayals. He also mentioned enjoying dinner with the Amodeis and praised their intelligence.
AI Regulation and Data Centres
The President voiced his opposition to AI regulation, arguing it could harm businesses. TIME raised concerns about reports of OpenAI's AI agents breaching government websites, to which Trump responded that such actions would incur penalties.
He also discussed data centres, stating that they lower local taxes and citing Loudoun County, Virginia, as an example, where the industry generated $1.5 billion this year.
Super Intelligence (SI) and AI Force
Trump introduced a new term for artificial intelligence: Super Intelligence (SI). He mentioned that Chinese President Xi Jinping agrees with this terminology. Additionally, he announced plans to rename the recently introduced AI Force, describing it as a group of experts who will offer him advice.
