Trump's Drone Tariffs: A Breakdown

Trump’s drone tariffs reach 100%, and Europe gets capped at 15%

A Section 232 proclamation introduces 100% tariffs on drones over 25kg, thermal imaging models, and docking stations from 3 September. The Trump administration caps the EU at 15% and the UK at 10%, if manufacturers can certify their hardware and software.

Key Points:

  • Tariff Rates:

    • 100% on drones with a maximum take-off weight above 25kg, thermal imaging, docking stations, and critical components.
    • 25% on drones of 25kg or less and other components listed in the annexes.
    • A third tranche starts at 25% from 9 February 2027.
  • European Impact: The allied cap is significant, applying to EU member states, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein at 15%, and the UK at 10%.

  • Certification Required: The cap is conditional; it applies only if "substantially all the critical components and technology are certified... to be products of" approved countries.

  • Justification: The Commerce Secretary found that drone imports threaten US national security due to:

    • Drones' essential role in military operations.
    • Import penetration creating strategic vulnerabilities.
    • Inadequate domestic capacity to meet national security needs.
    • Data transmission risks from foreign drones.
  • Carve-outs:

    • Suppliers on specific approved lists get 180 days before tariffs apply.
    • An onshoring program allows duty-free imports while building US facilities, subject to compliance monitoring.
