TU Darmstadt: Those Who Know AI Best Fear It Most

TU Darmstadt’s AI Monitor challenges the common assumption that fear of AI stems from ignorance, highlighting a paradoxical situation. The monitor reveals that 43% of individuals with strong AI knowledge anticipate AI taking over their jobs, compared to only 15% who have received any AI training, despite the AI Act’s literacy obligation coming into effect eighteen months prior.

The survey, conducted among more than 2,000 Germans using YouGov, reveals a concerning trend: those with deeper understanding of AI are more aware of its potential disruption. This is especially true for roles producing text, analysis, reports, code, or slides, making them more susceptible to AI’s impact.

Key takeaways:

  • Hallucinations and data protection top the list of concerns regarding AI, surpassing even the prospect of machine superintelligence.
  • Younger workers express higher anxiety about job security compared to older counterparts.
  • Only 15% of respondents have received any AI training, despite the AI Act’s requirements.

As Peter Buxmann, lead researcher, emphasizes, this situation warrants concern for employers, as lack of training and honest discussions about AI’s potential impact could exacerbate job insecurity.
