VEIR Raises $110M to Swap Copper for Superconductors in AI Data Centers

VEIR, a Massachusetts-based company, has secured $110 million in a Series C round, bringing their total funding to $225 million. The company specializes in developing superconducting power cables for AI data centers, aiming to revolutionize power delivery systems.

Tim Heidel, VEIR's CEO and co-founder, emphasized the need for innovative power solutions as AI infrastructure advances rapidly. Superconducting cables, when cooled to low temperatures, can carry more power than copper in a smaller space, reducing labor, materials, and installation costs.

The funds will be used to expand manufacturing capacity and develop new products, transitioning from testing to commercial projects. Weijie Yun from Tyche Partners, a co-leading investor, highlighted the critical importance of AI and the potential of VEIR's technology to address the limitations of traditional copper systems.

Key Points:

  • VEIR's cables, cooled to low temps, carry more power than copper.
  • Focus on behind-the-meter power for AI data centers.
  • From a 3-megawatt demonstration, VEIR is now scaling up for commercial deployments.
  • Follows recent investments in AI data center power, including TAR's $120m Series A and Google/Nvidia's data center alliance.
